GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs logistical work involving RSW Regional Jail’s property room, inmate property, and jail supplies; and operates the control room in alignment with RSW Regional Jail policies and procedures and performs clerical duties as assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Captain of Security.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Maintains control of all inmate property and jail supplies within the property room and warehouse. Performs Control Room Operator duties, clerical, and manual work needed to effectively maintain the RSW operations in compliance with all applicable procedures.

  • Assists Intake staff with logging inmate property in JMS;
  • Stores and accounts for inmate property in the property room;
  • Responsible for releasing, mailing, and disposing of property in compliance with RSW General Order 1200.12 – Inmate Property;
  • Responsible for stocking all supplies in the property room;
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the property room and warehouse;
  • Organizes, stocks, and inventories items in the warehouse;
  • Receives, inventories, and delivers to appropriate places, all items that are delivered;
  • Inventories and maintains an appropriate stock of all items/supplies in the warehouse;
  • Prepares a list of all items that are needed to be ordered and forwarded to the Support Services Sergeant;
  • Performs related tasks as required;
  • Identifies and reports all potential policy and procedure deficiencies;
  • Identifies and reports all potential training and operational deficiencies;
  • Operates perimeter and interior doors from the control console, appropriate with established procedures;
  • Maintains security of jail facility, confirming doors are secure at all times.
  • Operates communications systems, including but not limited to, radio, intercom, e-mail, and telephone.
  • Operates the video monitoring system through the use of multiple television cameras and monitoring screens.
  • Maintains and updates records, logs, and periodic reports of jail and inmate activities, including narrative reports, and notes of incidents and offenses.
  • Monitors closed-circuit television and radio traffic, fire alarms, panic alarms, outside call boxes, and various security and public areas from the control room.
  • Prepares various correspondence, forms, and/or reports.
  • Answers multi-line telephone and accurately screen, transfer, or take messages from the public and other government agencies.
  • Assigns radios and keys to facility staff as needed.
  • Proactive in identifying and correcting potential problems;
  • Performs related tasks as required;
  • Performs all duties in accordance with RSW Policy and Procedures, Virginia Department of Corrections standards, PREA standards, and all regulations as directed;
  • Performs all duties in compliance with all Federal, State, and Local Laws;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge and experience in conducting day-to-day operations as a Jail Technician; Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and operations of a modern Adult Detention Center; Ability to perform standard office practices, procedures, and use of office equipment; Ability to effectively communicate with staff and a diverse population remanded to RSW; Ability to meet short and long term organizational goals and objectives; ability to effectively establish good working relationships with coworkers, external organizations, contact, and the general public; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic; prepare accurate reports from file sources; ability to perform and organize work independently; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment; ability to remain calm in emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possess a Driver's License valid to operate a motor vehicle in Virginia. Experience in general office skills and record keeping, ability to effectively work with facility personnel; ability to effectively communicate with internal and external agencies using the English language, handwriting, and a computer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of force including but not limited to, standing and walking for long periods of time, picking up and moving heavy objects, climbing stairs and ladders, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; use of physical force and deployment of force equipment as needed; effective vocal communication, hearing and vision is required.
