GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Primary assignment is to operate the control room in alignment with RSW Regional Jail policies and procedures, and perform clerical duties as assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Captain of Security.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Performs Control Room Operator duties, clerical and manual work needed to effectively maintain the RSW operations in compliance with all applicable procedures.

  • Operate perimeter and interior doors from control console, appropriate with established procedures; Maintain security of jail facility, confirming doors are secure at all times.
  • Operate communications systems, including but not limited to, radio, intercom, e-mail, and telephone.
  • Operate video monitoring system through the use of multiple television cameras and monitoring screens.
  • Maintain and update records, logs, and periodic reports of jail and inmate activities, including narrative reports, and notes of incidents and offenses.
  • Monitor closed circuit television and radio traffic, fire alarms, panic alarms, outside call boxes, and various security and public areas from the control room.
  • Type various correspondence, forms, and/or reports.
  • Answer multi-line telephone and accurately screen, transfer, or take messages from public and other government agencies.
  • Assign radios and keys to facility staff as needed.
  • Be proactive in identifying and correcting potential problems;
  • Performs all duties in accordance with RSW Policy and Procedures, Virginia Department of Corrections standards, PREA standards and all regulations as directed;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge and experience in conducting day to day operation as a Control Room Operator. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and operations of a modern Adult Detention Center; Ability to perform standard office practices, procedures, use of office equipment; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; prepare accurate reports from file sources; ability to perform and organize work independently; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive team oriented work environment; ability to remain calm in emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; experience in general office skills and record keeping, ability to effectively work with facility personnel; ability to effectively communicate with internal and external agencies using the English language, hand writing and a computer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 21 years of age. This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of force including but not limited to, standing and walking for long periods of time, picking up and moving heavy objects, climbing stairs and ladders, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; use of physical force and deployment of force equipment as needed; effective vocal communication, hearing and vision is required.

  • must possess at least 20/20 binocular vision, corrected or uncorrected, and if uncorrected visual acuity is 20/100 or better binocular and 20/200 or better in worse eye
  • meet minimum requirements for color vision test with or without corrected lens(es)
  • must possess peripheral vision and be able to pass peripheral vision testing
  • must be capable of hearing normal frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 hertz at a pure tone level of 25 decibels or less and no greater than a 45 decibels at 4000 and 6000 hertz when checked by the Audiometer Test
  • must be able to navigate steps at regular intervals
  • must possess all digits and be able to pass dexterity examinations, to include the ability to easily manipulate, hold, and maneuver handheld items
